Cleaning Reviving Old Hardwood Floors

So you finally bought that “turn of the century” house you've always wanted, or you've decided it’s time to get to cleaning and reviving those old hardwood floors!  Either way, hang in there!  Hardwood floors were meant to last and there are several ways to go about cleaning and bringing some life back into that old wood.  If you take the time for cleaning and reviving old hardwood floors in the proper way, you will not have to do anything to them for years - but dust.

Solid hardwood floors are made to be cleaned, refurbished and revived for over 100 years. For cleaning and reviving of old hardwood floors to keep them looking beautiful, there are a few steps to follow. 1) If the floors have been worn over time and indented, the first step is to sand, or screen the top layer.  By doing this, you will take off the top layer of wear and tear. 2) After screening, the next step is to put a high quality sealant or wax on the floor. If you do this step while cleaning and reviving old hardwood floors, the amount of moisture and humidity that is absorbed into the flooring will be reduced.  This will cut down on the wood buckling, and expanding.

This last step in cleaning and reviving old hardwood floors is strictly your choice.  Feel free to leave your hardwood unfinished if you like.  But if not, apply one coat of the finish, and let it dry completely.  Then add another, and let it dry completely. If you want a very high gloss, add a third coat.
